As we imagine the future of our country, and our future within it we continue to evaluate where we are, where we could be, and what are the factors that would determine continuous success and prosperity. A future where we can independently take care of our needs and wants and give our citizens the path to realize their dreams. That would be true independence!
The truth is, no country in history has ever achieved greatness until it is free to make decisions in its own interest and prioritizes these decisions consistently. What enables such freedom? It is self-reliance. When a country can shed external dependencies and
maximize the utilization of indigenous resources, it becomes self-reliant and gains the ability to unlock its full potential.
It is true that as citizens, we have been left by the people that govern us to fend for ourselves. We have been deprived of the basics. Rule of law, access to food and water, sanitation, healthcare facilities, reliable infrastructure, lack of economic opportunity. The list goes on.
It is also true that if you look back for the last 40 years and look at most indicators of progress, the country has progressed forward. So much has improved: Highways, infrastructure, physical and digital connectivity, law and order, for profit and non-profit institutions, arts and culture; all of them have become better and continue to improve.
While it is true many of our best and brightest have sought to immigrate and seek opportunities in foreign lands, it is also true that we have a sizable population, and the vast majority cannot immigrate. Our problems must be solved for that majority and the generations to come.
Things have not improved at pace with our population growth and that is something that needs to change if we are to become self-reliant.
So, what is the path to self-reliance, you may ask. To break out of the rut, we need to create economic opportunities within Pakistan for our people that would allow our people to be able to provide for their loved ones, see a path to social mobility, and to imagine and realize a better future for their children.
Economic opportunities are driven by resources available within the country. Our biggest one is our human resource. We have a lot of people at our disposal and the majority is young. By some estimates more than 60 percent of our population is under 30 years old.
The future of this country will be determined by this young generation that is coming, not
the clueless people who govern us this day. To realize this opportunity for this upcoming
generation, we must provide them with:
Nations are not built on aid and handouts. They are built when enough people within a nation decide that they will take back control, rely on their own abilities and resources, and put in the hard work and effort that is needed to map out a path to prosperity.
The reason we haven’t broken out yet is that there is no well-directed effort to chase self-reliance. Given the right incentives and learning, our human capital, especially our youth will go on and mark the world with their achievements individually and collectively. New institutions will emerge, new business models will be found, and individual achievements
will fuel collective opportunities .
Each of us has a role to play. If we all do our respective parts to the best of our abilities, there is no question that success stories will begin to emerge, and the gains will be compound quickly.
The time to start is NOW! Let us take back control and write our own future.
